Do you or your child have an interest in learning piano? That’s wonderful! Music brings joy to both performers and listeners, and can provide a wealth of cultural and social experiences. I’d like to share the joy of music with you in a positive and supportive setting, helping to develop your (or your child’s) interest in piano into a satisfying accomplishment and a rewarding pastime. I offer lessons in beginning piano and classical piano to students of all ages, with a gradual (and painless!) introduction to the fundamentals of music.
Student Opportunities
Interested students will have the opportunity to play in formal group recitals at various times throughout the year. I encourage and make arrangements for students to participate in the MMTA Piano Exams when they are ready to move to the next level of study. Students who participate will receive certificates, ribbons and challenge points.
Message to Adult Students
After my middle child graduated from high school, I gathered my courage and took the first steps toward fulfilling a long-time dream of playing a string instrument (the double bass). I experienced the mix of emotions common to older students: excitement, performance anxiety, and fear of looking foolish. The negative emotions quickly subsided and I became absorbed in the task of learning something new. If your situation is similar, don’t worry—you can do it!
Education
- My piano studies began at the age of nine and continued through college--twelve years of formal lessons.
- Bachelor of Arts, Macalester College, with minor in music and four years of piano study with Maria Bucka.
- MS in Education and PhD in Human Development from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York.
Experience
In addition to piano, my professional teaching experience includes several years of classroom instruction in psychology. Though my career followed other paths, music has always been my avocation. Post-college, my involvement with music included many years of choral performance with church choirs in Appleton, Wisconsin, and Edina. For a new challenge I began studying the string bass in 2004 and have been a performing member of the Minnetonka Symphony since 2007. I've been a volunteer in the Edina middle schools; currently I'm a classroom volunteer at Cornelia Elementary School.
